retailcommon on WWD

Being interviewed by the fashion media journal referred to as “the bible of fashion” doesn’t happen everyday. That’s why when WWD (Women’s Wear Daily) turned to retailcommon for comment in their “Virtual Showrooms” feature, we very graciously agreed.

Tom Cassidy – President/CEO, retailcommon

Without community, there would be no retailcommon. That’s why we’re dedicating a section of our newsletter to spotlighting the people, brands, distributors, agents, and retailers that are a fundamental part of the retailcommon culture. In this edition, we’re turning the spotlight on our very own Tom Cassidy, retailcommon President/CEO, and Sarah Shell, Owner/Designer of the luxury leather bags brand 442 McAdam, both of whom veered off the paved path to get to where they are today.

Tom Cassidy – President/CEO, retailcommon • Sarah Shell – Founder/ Owner/Designer, 442 McAdam

Tom Cassidy – President/CEO, retailcommon

Picture this: you walk into an office for a 10 o’clock meeting with a President/CEO you’ve never met. The chair at the administration front desk is empty and waiting for direction puts you at risk of being late. So you walk into the elevator, and press the number that will jet you up to the top floor. You exit and naturally head toward the corner office where a door, with a pewter engraved plate, will open to reveal a power-suit wearing CEO seated comfortably in a black leather chair behind an over-sized desk, in an obnoxiously large, sun-filled room. Obviously. Obviously… unless the person you’re meeting with happens to be Tom Cassidy, President and CEO of retailcommon.

Just as retailcommon is not your ordinary ecommerce site, Tom Cassidy is not your ordinary President/CEO. Dressed casually in slim fit denim, Chuck Taylors, and a plaid buttom-up layered over a white v-neck tee, I sat down with Tom at retailcommon headquarters to ask him a few questions about retailcommon, over coffee that he brewed, and an office desk he built with his own two hands.

Sarah Shell – Founder/Owner/Designer, 442 McAdam

“I actually resisted my temptation to be in fashion—my first degree was in Biology. My parents were very supportive when I broke the news that instead of going to med school, I wanted to pursue fashion design. A very random occurrence led to the founding of 442 McAdam…this is definitely not the route I imagined,” says Shell, Founder, Owner and Designer of the luxury leather bag brand 442 McAdam.

Imagined or not, the success of 442 McAdam since its launch in October 2008 is very real. Though still in its infancy, 442 McAdam has already been featured by major fashion print and broadcast media. This combined with 442’s red carpet appearances, and sightings on shoulder’s of celebrities, it’s safe to say that for Shell, the continued success of 442 McAdam is pretty much ‘in the bag.’
